What it does

Staff manage students, houses, events, and scoring in one place. The school can theme eCarnival with its own logo and colours. On carnival day, results stay live. At the end, a print-friendly report makes champions and winning houses easy to see.

  • Fast data entry for scores, including distances and times
  • A live results dashboard, with filters when you need a closer look
  • A full results printout when the carnival ends
  • Your own points standards, or SmartPoints to allocate points for you
  • Houses ordered by points, including a third-place year champion on the printout

On the day

Data entry is built to stay out of the way.

  1. Choose the event.
  2. Find the student. Autocomplete matches part of a first name or surname, and only lists students who can enter that event.
  3. Enter the score. After it is saved, the page returns to the student field, so the next entry does not need the mouse. Tab reaches the score field.

Results just entered stay on screen, and a mistake can be corrected.

At the school

eCarnival is a lightweight web application. The install guide published with the previous site asks for a modest server: about 4 GB of memory and a 2-core processor. It describes the application, including the database, as under 4 MB. The server needs an internet connection to register the installation and to check for updates.

It is meant to run on the school network. Staff on that network open it in a browser.

Sign-in can use the school’s directory (LDAP). Access is split into three roles.

  • Data entry

The home page and the results pages.

  • Carnival coordinators

Students, events, the carnival program, and results. Not data entry.

  • Administrators

Configuration and results, including backups and updates.

Licence and install

Email Ettienne to purchase a licence and register the installation. The installation guide is for schools that hold a licence. Ask and he will send the current one.

Notes published with the previous website go up to version 1.5.4, dated 5 November 2023. Ask which version a new school would install today.

A wider house points system, covering academic and community achievements as well as sport, has been previewed. It is not the finished school-wide system yet.
